Making Moving Easy

Moving from one location to the next, whether it is across town or across the country can be stressful. The good news is there are many steps you can take to make the move much easier than you might ordinarily think.

Making a list of everything that needs to be done is the first step in making your move much easier and less stressful. A record keeping system, in particular, can be a lifesaver. Create a numbered system where you can categorize every box you pack along with everything that is in that box. For example: #23 Living Room: framed photographs, photo albums, crystal clock, porcelain collection

Create a place where everything related to your move is kept. You might use a box where you store packing tape, scissors, marking pens and your packing list. This will help ensure everything can be located easily while you’re packing and you do not waste precious time looking for needed items.

When marking items avoid being generic. Try to be specific as possible. Do not label items as Misc. In addition, do not simply label a box as Living Room or Kitchen as you are likely to have more than one box for each room of your home.

Make sure you have plenty of moving supplies on hand before you event get started. You will need a large supply of boxes, probably even more than you might believe possible. It’s always a good idea to keep about a dozen boxes or so on hand for last minute items that are not packed until moving day. In addition, be sure to have plenty of packing tape, newspaper, packing paper, packing peanuts and bubble wrap. When obtaining moving boxes, try to obtain a variety of sizes. Many movers provide a variety of boxes and moving kits. While they are not free, they are much sturdier and more convenient than the free ones you can get a the grocery store. Purchasing the right kind of packing materials definitely pays off in the end.

Avoid packing too much in each box as this can make them heavier to move and lift. Keeping the weight of each box reasonable will ensure there are no injuries during the moving process.

Try to start packing as soon as possible. While packing can be a daunting task, getting started early will help it go more smoothly and keep it as stress-free as possible. Pack out of season clothing and other items you do not really need on a daily basis first. Pare down items to bare essentials.

When you begin packing, work toward your goal one room at a time. Be sure to label each box along with a description of the contents. You may wish to securely tape an inventory list on each box along with the final destination of the box; such as living room, kitchen, etc.

Try to keep like items together as much as possible. For example, pack any extension cords with their appliances, etc. Make sure you do not lose small items during the packing process by placing them in envelopes. 9x12 clasp envelopes work well for this purpose. Small envelopes work well for keeping picture hooks with pictures and shelf brackets with shelves, etc.

You might also consider color coordinating rooms or family members. Color coded stickers can be applied to the boxes for each room of the house or each family member. For example, all of the boxes for the living room might have a blue sticker while kitchen boxes all have a yellow sticker. Alternately, mom might have a bright pink sticker while Little Johnny has a light blue sticker. This can keep things coordinated and organized.
